In humans, Ibuprofen is mostly used for Fever, Pain and Inflammation but it's use in cats proves very dangerous even if used in small quantity. Cat is a very sensitive pet. Mode of Action of Ibuprofen is that it blocks the enzyme causing Fever, Pain and Inflammation. But when used in cats, it blocks other enzymes also, including those necessary for normal functioning of kidney and liver.
When used in Cats, Ibuprofen is immediately absorbed and circulates in blood. Usually, the medicines, after reaching the blood circulation, is gradually excreted from the body through kidneys. But in cats, Ibuprofen, after its absorption, keeps on circulating again and again. That's the reason, it leaves very toxic effects in cats.
Toxic effects of Ibuprofen depend on many factors including its dose, kidneys, stomach, liver problem, dehydration, low blood pressure, stress and age decide the limit of toxic effects of Ibuprofen. Kittens and old age cats are more prone to these toxic effects of Ibuprofen.
Signs and Symptoms:
If we talk about the symptoms, these include:
- Loss of appetite
- Laziness
- More intake of water
- Urination and
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Depression
- Abdominal pain
- Tarry dark or reddish stool having blood in it
